Ithaca, NY. Activists across the nation are demanding that TIAA-CREF, one of the largest financial services in the US, stop investing in companies that profit off of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands and peoples.. Despite their slogan of “financial services for the greater good,” they have recently censored a shareholder resolution calling for an investigation of these companies, and have moved their annual shareholder’s meeting from New York City to Charlotte, NC, in an attempt to avoid protests. Despite their efforts to dodge protests, activists turned out out in force in dozens of other cities on July 19th, the day of the Shareholder Meeting, to prove them wrong, to shame them for their act of censorship, and to draw attention to the realities of occupation. In Ithaca, NY, the action was organized by the new Jewish Voice for Peace chapter.

Ithaca, NY was one of many cities across the U.S. whee activists rallied with only hours notice to call for the release of the Audacity of Hope. On Friday, July 1, 2011, the U.S. Boat to Gaza – The Audacity of Hope – was stopped by the Greek Coast Guard. After a stand off that unfolded over several hours a 2nd Greek Coast Guard boat arrived. This boat carried heavily armed Greek commandos and this shifted the dynamic. Soon after a decision was made to bring the boat back to a dock in Athens, not the same one the boat had previously been at. Once docked we learned that the Greek authorities are most likely going to bring some type of charges against the captain of our boat, and that should happen tomorrow (Saturday) morning. In solidarity with the captain, most of the passengers and other crew members decided to spend the night on the boat. We do not yet know what their plans are for tomorrow, or what the next steps in all of this will be. As soon as we find out we will get word to you all. The good news today was the tremendous outpouring of calls and emails sent to the Greek Embassy in Washington, DC as well as Greek consulates around the country. Many people have also contacted the U.S. State Dept. urging them to stop supporting the Israeli efforts to undermine the flotilla. Please be sure to check our website at http://ustogaza.org and Twitter at http://twitter.com/usboattogaza for regular updates.

Dr. Ismail Mehr, an anesthesiologist and head of the department at St. James Hospital in Hornell, NY, organized and led a medical relief mission in Gaza just days following the attacks in Gaza last December and January which left upwards of 1,400-1,500 Palestinians dead and many more wounded, homeless, and without water. He was invited to Ithaca by Ithaca Unitarian-Universalists for Justice in the Middle East (Ithaca UUJME) and Ithaca College Students for a Just Peace. His presentation in the annex of the Ithaca Unitarian Church annex was recorded on April 15, 2009. In the first part of his presentation, Dr. Mehr gives an historical overview of the situation leading up to the assault of Gaza which Israel calls “Operation Cast Lead”. This is followed by his personal account of the delegation he led.
